Sunderland 1-1 Luton: Both sides end with 10 men at Stadium of Light
Saturday 12 January 2019 21:17, UK
Sunderland and Luton both had a player sent off as their Sky Bet League One encounter ended 1-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Luton lost Nathan Jones in midweek, the club's former boss having accepted the managerial post at Stoke.
In his place, in a caretaker capacity, was Sunderland-born Mick Harford, and his Hatters team started well.
Black Cats goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin made two excellent saves in the first 45 minutes from Andrew Shinnie and James Collins.
Between the saves Chris Maguire put Sunderland ahead when he slotted into the bottom corner from 16 yards after Lynden Gooch's shot was blocked by Alan McCormack.
However, midway through the second half, Luton levelled from the spot, referee Lee Probert pointing to the spot and Collins scoring after he had been tripped by Jack Baldwin.
Luton went down to 10 men after striker Danny Hylton clashed with Baldwin, the striker seeing a straight red card for violent conduct.
Then, deep into added time, Maguire was also dismissed with Probert indicating a stamp on McCormack being the reason.
