Hampden Park's future is set to be decided at a Scottish FA board meeting on Wednesday.
The governing body's lease at the national stadium in Glasgow expires in 2020 and the board have been examining a bid from the Scottish Rugby Union that would see international matches and major cup finals moved to Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
It is understood the Scottish FA have held talks with owners Queen's Park about purchasing the stadium for a £2m fee.
Currently, Hampden Park is rented to the governing body - reports claim Queen's Park get £300,000 per year - and the Scottish FA's wholly owned subsidiary, Hampden Park Ltd, runs the stadium.
A decision by the Scottish FA to move from Scottish football's spiritual home to the 67,000-capacity home of Scottish rugby would have a major impact on Queen's Park, the amateur team who play in League Two.
Hampden Park, with a capacity of just over 51,000, has hosted numerous domestic cup finals as well as three European Cup finals.
The stadium will also host three group stage games and one last-16 match at the European Championships in 2020.
The Scottish FA board could take more time to consider their decision when they meet at the national stadium on Wednesday.
Scotland boss Alex McLeish was non-committal at a Hampden Park press conference on Monday afternoon when he announced his squad for the double-header against Belgium and Albania.
"It's business, isn't it?" the former Scotland and Aberdeen defender said. "It's difficult for me to say if it's right or it's wrong. Obviously I've got fantastic memories of playing at Hampden, which will always be there with me.
"But if it's in the name of progress then we will just have to go with the flow.
"We will wait to hear what the decision is. You just get on with it. If it happens that we don't play at Hampden, it happens. Equally, if we stay here then fine."
