The Blues could lift this year’s trophy with three games to spare if they beat Crystal Palace in Sunday’s clash at Stamford Bridge. A decade ago Frank Lampard’s brace clinched their first title in 50 years at Bolton.

Chelsea went into the game in top spot having beaten Fulham 3-1 the previous weekend, but victory against Sam Allardyce’s side, who eventually finished the campaign in sixth place, would be no easy feat...

First half barrage

Chelsea had to be at their resolute best as the home side dominated the first half and Petr Cech was in inspired form to deny Stelios Giannakopoulos and Gary Speed.

The Blues, who were without wingers Arjen Robben and Damien Duff due to injury, barely featured as an attacking force but withstood the aerial barrage and made it to the break without conceding.

Breakthrough

Sensing their opportunity, Chelsea improved in the second half and Lampard’s opening goal arrived in controversial circumstances on the hour-mark.

Jiri Jarosik appeared to foul Bolton’s Fernando Hierro in the build-up, but Lampard made no mistake as he latched onto a Didier Drogba flick-on, cut in from the left-hand side of the box and smashed his finish beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen. Bolton were furious, but their protests were lost in the wild Chelsea celebrations that followed.

Bolton poured forward in search of an equaliser, and Cech pulled off a stunning save after a long throw from Speed deflected off Geremi towards goal. The Czech shot-stopper dived high to his right and somehow kept it out.

The Blues then sealed the points just over quarter of an hour later as Lampard capped a rapid counter-attack by coolly rounding Jaaskelainen and slotting into the empty net.

Special

Mourinho, who was already congratulating his technical staff before the referee blew the final whistle, later said: "Our group is a special group. They deserve this. Nobody speaking with sense can say we don’t deserve this title, because we did it absolutely magnificently.

"I’m very happy for the fans, especially for the fans who have never been champions. Roman (Abramovich), I think he deserves a lot, but this group is really special. That’s why I want to stay with them the maximum time I can."

Chelsea secured two wins and a draw in their remaining three games, finishing the season 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal having only lost one league game and conceded 15 goals all season.

Match-winner Lampard ended the season with 13 Premier League goals and was named the Premier League Player of the Season and the PFA Fans Player of the Year.
