Towering Spaniard lands a notable double

Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar has scooped the Scottish Football Writers' Player of the Year award. The Spaniard has added the honour to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League's Player of the Season accolade he received last month. The 26-year-old beat Celtic winger Aiden McGeady, who himself has won the PFA Scotland award, to the coveted prize. It is just reward for the centre-back, who has made an immediate impact since his £2.4million move from Osasuna last summer. He put in a man-of-the-match performance to help Rangers shut out Fiorentina in midweek to reach the Uefa Cup final. And his fantastic form has helped Rangers to also land the CIS Cup, while they are also in the final of the Scottish Cup and are very much in contention in the SPL, where they play Hibs on Sunday, the first of eight games in 21 days.

Really happy

Cuellar said: "I am really happy with the award. It is not only recognition for myself but for all the hard work of the whole team. It is an honour for me to receive it. "A big factor in my first season here has been the competitiveness of the squad because we have a really good group of players here."
