Johan Mjallby could well be forced to retire having failed to recover from a knee injury.

Swedish defender Johan Mjallby could well be forced to retire having failed to recover from a persistent knee injury.

The Levante star returned to Spain from America this week where he had travelled to get a further opinion on his ailment.

The player has yet to reveal what progress, if any, was made by the trip, but Levante doctors fear that he may not be able to play again in the Spanish top flight.

Although the 34-year-old's knee complaint did initially respond to treatment, he has not been able to make a full recovery.

Mjallby has already undergone two operations on the problem and he could now be forced from the professional game.

"The injury is very complicated, and a total recuperation at the age of 34 after two operations will be difficult," stated Levante doctor Jose Nebot.
