Gareth Bale's 100th goal for Real Madrid helped the club leapfrog city rivals Atletico Madrid into second place in La Liga after a comprehensive 3-1 derby victory at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Casemiro's overhead kick handed Real an early lead (16) only for Antoine Griezmann to peg them back (25).

However, Sergio Ramos' penalty (42) restored the visitors' advantage before substitute Bale rounded off the victory after the break (74) - with Thomas Partey then seeing red for a second bookable offence (80).

The win inflicts a first home defeat this season on Atletico, and means Real move five points behind leaders Barcelona, who are in action at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Just nine minutes later, however, Atletico were level thanks to Griezmann, who beat the offside trap to nutmeg Thibaut Courtois - who faced a hostile reception throughout against his former club. The goal, meanwhile, stood after a check from VAR.

Once more, VAR was called upon to check a penalty call after Jose Maria Gimenez brought down Vinicius Junior on the edge of the area, but after the referee pointed to the spot, Ramos restored Real's lead just before the break.

Atleti made two changes - captain Godin and Saul returned to the side, with Rodrigo and Juanfran dropping to the bench.

Two Real changes saw Reguilon depose Marcelo at left-back, while Casemiro came in for the injured Llorente in midfield.

On his first home start since joining Atleti on loan, Alvaro Morata thought he had levelled 10 minutes into the second half, but another VAR check deemed the striker to be offside after he sublimely lobbed Courtois. The former Real striker was then booked for a dive inside the area moments later.

Bale came off the bench to round off the win for Real, superbly sliding an effort beyond Jan Oblak for what was his 100th goal in his 217th appearance for the club.

Atletico's match went from bad to worse when Partey received a second yellow, leaving the hosts with 10 men for the final 10 minutes on a forgettable afternoon for Diego Simeone's side.

Man of the match - Luka Modric

The Ballon d'Or winner ran the show from the middle as Real secured their first taste of victory at Atletico's new stadium.

His delightful assist for Bale rounded off the win, but it was an assured performance alongside Toni Kroos which built the platform for Real to move up to second.
