Aberdeen 2-0 Dundee United: Dons improvement under Stephen Robinson continues with comfortable victory

Report as Aberdeen beat Dundee United 2-0 in the Scottish Premiership; goals from Emmanuel Agyei and Toyosi Olusanyi sealed the three points for Stephen Robinson's side; Dons secure top flight status with win

Aberdeen's Stephen Robinson applauds the fans at full time after earning his first win as head coach

Aberdeen’s improvement under Stephen Robinson continued as the Dons moved to within three points of seventh-placed Dundee United with a 2-0 victory over the Tangerines at Pittodrie.

Stuart Armstrong struck against his former side in the first half and, after Emmanuel Agyei was sent off for the visitors late on, Toyosi Olusanyi put the seal on a win which officially secured Aberdeen's William Hill Premiership status after a turbulent campaign.

Olusanya could have given the home side the lead in the eighth minute after pouncing on slack defending. Iurie Iovu and Ross Graham made a mess of trying to deal with Dimitar Mitov's punt forward and after Olusanya nipped in behind the two defenders, Dave Richards was quickly off his line to save at his feet.

However, the on-loan Houston Dynamo forward played a pivotal part in Aberdeen's opener in the 19th minute. Olusanya latched on to a clipped ball forward in the corner of the penalty area and then played in Armstrong, who coolly slotted home in the far corner.

Olusanya's pace, power and movement caused the visitors further problems in the 28th minute as his forceful run drew a foul from Agyei but Kevin Nisbet's resultant 22-yard free-kick was deflected wide for a corner.

United's first-half threat was minimal prompting boss Jim Goodwin into making a double change at the interval, Julius Eskesen and Max Watters replacing Dario Naamo and Krisztian Keresztes.

But the Tangerines could have fallen further behind four minutes into the second half when Olusanya glanced a free header wide of the target from an excellent Jack Milne delivery.

United did have the ball in the net in the 55th minute, Zach Sapsford firing in at the back post but Eskesen, who provided the cutback, had strayed into an offside position.

Moments later, Eskesen blazed over the crossbar when he should have done better as Goodwin's men applied more pressure in search of a leveller.

Aberdeen freshened up their team in a bid to stem the flow and they worked another opening for Olusanya, whose finishing continued to desert him, this time wildly blazing over after a swift break involving substitions Graeme Shinnie, Lyall Cameron and Mitchel Frame.

The Englishman's determination continued and in the 84th minute, he was chopped down by the wreckless Agyei, who was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card.

With two minutes remaining Olusanya did get the final say with the goal his all-round display deserved. Cameron's rasping 25-yard shot was parried by Richards and Olusanya smashed in the rebound to send the bulk of the 18,163 supporters home happy.
