Anderlecht v Manchester United preview: Wayne Rooney left out of squad
Thursday 13 April 2017 19:26, UK
Manchester United travel to Anderlecht in their Europa League quarter-final first leg without captain Wayne Rooney.
Rooney has been left out of Manchester United's squad as manager Jose Mourinho says the club captain is not happy with his fitness.
Asked about Rooney ahead of the match, Mourinho said: "He's not confident, he's not happy, he has bad feelings with his ankle and is not ready to play."
United go to Belgian league leaders Anderlecht having lost just twice in 34 games.
Team news
David De Gea, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young took part in training on Wednesday, with Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones the only first-team regulars missing.
Spanish goalkeeper de Gea missed Sunday's 3-0 win over Sunderland with a hip problem. United manager Jose Mourinho may opt to keep de Gea out of action come Thursday's quarter-final first leg match in Brussels and bring him back for this weekend's league fixture against leaders Chelsea instead.
That would mean Sergio Romero continuing between the posts against Anderlecht.
Opta stats
Anderlecht have won their last two home matches against Manchester United, winning 3-1 in November 1968 and 2-1 in October 2000.
United's biggest-ever victory was against the Belgian side in September 1956, beating them 10-0 in a European Cup preliminary game.
Jose Mourinho has won both of his previous encounters with Anderlecht as manager, with Chelsea in the 2005-06 Champions League group stage
This is Anderlecht's first appearance at the quarter-final stage of a European competition since the 1996-97 UEFA Cup - they were eliminated 2-3 on aggregate by Inter Milan
The Red Devils have been knocked out of two of their last three European quarter-final ties, losing out to Bayern Munich in the 2009/10 and 2013/14 Champions League, while beating Chelsea in 2010/11.
The Purple and White have scored in all 10 of their Europa League games so far this season, netting 21 goals. KRC Genk (22) are the only side left in the competition to have scored more.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been involved in eight Europa League goals this season (5 goals, 3 assists), more than any other player left in the competition.
United have kept more clean sheets than any other side in the Europa League this season (6), and have conceded the fewest goals of teams to have got past the group stage.
Charlie's prediction
I don't think this is as easy as everybody is expecting. When do United commit and go all in for the Europa? They're still in the top-four picture so it's not like they've had the chance to rest players and focus on this tie.
With the players Anderlecht have this isn't a gimme and you could even see against Sunderland that there's still vulnerable aspects to Jose Mourinho's side.
Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring on Sunday will have given them a boost but I have a feeling that United will get an early goal and then fail to see it out.
Charlie predicts: 2-1 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score first - 70/1 with Sky Bet
Betting
United are marginally odds-on with Sky Bet to establish a first-leg lead, with Anderlecht up against 29/10, while a stalemate is priced at 12/5. Mourinho's men are also favourites at 11/8 in the Europa League outright, with their hosts the second biggest price of those left in the competition at 22/1. Ibrahimovic heads the first goalscorer betting at 7/2, while Lukasz Teodorczyk is considered the hosts' main threat at 9/2 to break the deadlock.
