Serious Hatch injury overshadows FA Cup clash

Matthew Tipton netted the only goal as Droylsden beat League Two leaders Darlington 1-0 to book a surprise place in the FA Cup second round. The Blue Square North outfit sit 58 places below the Quakers but that counted for nothing when Tipton netted the decisive winner as early as the 26th minute. The tie was halted for more than half an hour in the second-half when on-loan striker Liam Hatch was hospitalised with a suspected broken neck, but Droylsden held on to reach the second round for the first time in 30 years and set up a clash with Chesterfield. Darlington struggled to cope with a hostile Butchers Arms Ground and Peterborough loanee Hatch's miscued shot after 17 minutes set the tone for the visitors. Midfielder Neil Prince took full advantage and gifted Droylsden a surprise lead when Tipton lashed home his pin-point cross from close range. The visitors looked renewed after the break and Hatch and Alan White both should have brought them level but both somehow failed to hit the target from close range. Just as Droylsden thought they were home and dry Hatch's serious injury in the 80th minute set the nerves going but the Bloods showed maturity to set up a second-round clash at Chesterfield.
