France v Scotland preview: Dimitri Payet set to keep starting place
Sunday 5 June 2016 18:47, UK
Dimitri Payet is set to keep his starting place in the France squad as they play their final Euro 2016 warm-up game against Scotland in Metz on Saturday.
The West Ham forward scored a stunning 90th-minute free-kick to seal a 3-2 win for Les Bleus against Cameroon earlier in the week and the host nation will be looking to make it four consecutive wins ahead of the tournament.
While the team have been plagued by off-field issues and player injuries, their defence has also become an area of concern - conceding twice in their last four internationals - but manager Didier Deschamps is insistent his side can still be competitive.
"Everyone was already worried six months ago, a year ago. We haven't much time, but it is not just the defence. We are capable of scoring goals and creating problems for any opponents," he said from France's training camp in Austria.
Scotland have also had a number of players withdraw from their squad, although Saturday night's meeting at the 26,700-capacity Stade Saint-Symphorien will be their last game before the World Cup 2018 qualifiers begin in September.
Gordon Strachan's men fell to a 1-0 defeat against Italy last Sunday after a good run of results, and will be looking for a strong performance to prepare themselves for the likes of England and Slovakia during qualifications for the tournament in Russia.
"These are the teams you want to be testing yourselves against because, once the qualifiers come around, we are going to be playing against teams of this calibre, and we need to make sure we have got a chance of qualifying," said defender Russell Martin.
Team news
France suffered a huge blow on Tuesday as Lassana Diarra pulled out of the 23-man squad with an injury minutes before the final deadline.
Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has come into the side in his place, while Diarra joins the likes of Mathieu Debuchy, Mamadou Sakho, Raphael Varane and Jeremy Mathieu on the sidelines.
But there are positives for Les Bleus as Anthony Martial has shaken off a thigh injury and is available, while Antoine Griezmann joined up with the squad following Atletico Madrid's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Christophe Berra and Barry Bannan are the latest players to withdraw from the Scotland squad ahead of Saturday's game, but Hull trio Andrew Robertson, Robert Snodgrass and Shaun Maloney have travelled to France after winning promotion back to the Premier League.
Other omissions include Rangers defender Lee Wallace, Derby's Chris Martin and Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton while goalkeepers Allan McGregor and Scott Bain are both missing with back injuries.
