Fulham 1-1 Newcastle: Rodrigo Muniz rescues point for hosts after Jacob Murphy's stunner at Craven Cottage

Rodrigo Muniz's unorthodox equaliser denied Matthias Jaissle a pressure-relieving victory but his Newcastle side were still much improved in a deserved 1-1 draw at Fulham.

The heat had began to ramp up on the German boss after the Magpies were booed off at the end of a limp home defeat to Everton on Monday night but a chalk-and-cheese showing in west London lacked only the three points in a game they arguably shaded.

Newcastle thought they had earned a first-half lead when Dan Burn nodded home from a corner but his celebrations in front of his old fans were cut short with Yoane Wissa penalised for a shirt pull on Timothy Castagne.

There should have been no need for the VAR had Harvey Barnes buried his chance when played in behind moments earlier, but aimed hisfinish too close to Bernd Leno when clean through.

The best Fulham could muster, despite their territorial dominance, was a Josh King volley and a glancing header from their internationally-recognised teenager, as their recent struggles in front of goal continued.

The game appeared to be drifting towards a first draw between these two in 19 Premier League meetings in the capital, until a loose pass from Sander Berge across midfield allowed Murphy to run at Antonee Robinson before turning inside and unleashing an unstoppable effort beyond Leno.

The relief in Jaissle's celebration was evident but was only a brief respite with Fulham's messy equaliser coming only three minutes later, as Cesar Palacios' pass deflected into the path of Muniz and his inventive flick beat Lukas Hornicek with some help from Burn.

It was his first Premier League goal in seven months but came at the perfect time to rescue a point for the hosts, and deny Jaissle that victory he would have found so personally valuable.
