Houston Dynamo went top of Major League Soccer's Western Conference with a 2-1 victory at home to Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night.
Alberto Elis gave the Dynamo a 15th-minute lead and Erick Torres doubled the advantage with a penalty midway through the second half.
Although Brek Shea set up an exciting finish with a goal five minutes from time at BBVA Compass Stadium, the hosts held on to climb above fellow Texans FC Dallas.
Vancouver remain sixth in the standings after a first defeat in three matches.
