Hull captain Michael Dawson will miss Wednesday's Sky Bet Championship clash with Reading at the KC Stadium after limping off towards the end of Saturday's 1-0 win over Bolton.
Dawson suffered a knee injury which Tigers boss Steve Bruce expects to rule him out for the entire festive campaign, leaving him with a selection headache in defence for the sixth match in the Sky Bet Football League's 10 in 10, live on Sky Sports.
With Alex Bruce also ruled out with a back injury, the City manager is left with just two fit centre-halves so Harry Maguire will step up from the bench to partner Curtis Davies in the middle.
Although Bruce will wish to keep changes to a minimum, he may be tempted to start with Robert Snodgrass who impressed against the Trotters after replacing the out-of-sorts Mo Diame.
Caretaker manager Martin Kuhl will again take charge of Reading as their search for a new boss continues.
Kuhl was boosted by the return of Paul McShane, following a facial injury, in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Preston, and he is again expected to start at one of his former clubs.
Stephen Quinn, because of a knee injury, and Aaron Tshibola, owing to an ankle problem, are likely to miss out, however.
"It's another tough away game but the lads have got to stand up and start enjoying playing the games and looking for the battles," Kuhl said.
