Leeds 0-1 Huddersfield: Town extend Championship lead

Aaron Mooy's spectacular second-half strike saw off Leeds and kept unbeaten local rivals Huddersfield top of the Sky Bet Championship table following their best-ever start in the modern era.

Terriers' head coach David Wagner celebrated his manager of the month award with a fifth league win of the campaign thanks to on-loan Manchester City midfielder Mooy's brilliant long-range effort in the 55th minute.

It was the Australia international's first goal in English football and secured Wagner's high-flyers a thoroughly deserved 1-0 victory, their second straight win at Elland Road.

The Terriers began the 1952/3 season with four wins and two draws after six matches and this was eclipsed by Wagner's side, who have dropped just two points from five wins and a draw.

Mooy oozed class throughout, orchestrating in midfield as Huddersfield dominated possession, but neither side created a chance of note in the first half an hour.

Mooy then made space on the edge of the penalty area, only to drag his low right-footed shot wide before Leeds centre-half Kyle Bartley did well to block Jack Payne's effort as the visitors continued to probe.

Leeds threatened to take the lead following a rare foray forward as half-time approached, with striker Chris Wood heading Kalvin Phillips' corner wide of the near post, but considering the two local rivals had shared eight goals in their previous two encounters, the first period was a muted affair.

Referee Roger East earned the wrath of the Leeds faithful in the 44th minute when he was unmoved following Marcus Antonsson's tumble in the box following a Chris Schindler challenge.

The second period began in much the same vein with Huddersfield enjoying the lion's share of the ball and they were rewarded for their patience in spectacular fashion in the 55th minute.

Mooy started and finished the move which led to the opening goal. His cross was headed half clear by Leeds centre-half Pontus Jansson and when the ball fell back to the Australian he unleashed an unstoppable rising drive that flew into the top corner.

Huddersfield's travelling fans were revelling in their unaccustomed status as Championship pace-setters and belted out a rendition of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' to onlooking Leeds head coach Garry Monk. His side have lost two out of three home league games this season and have won only one of their first six.

Home supporters were running out of patience as Leeds' passes continued to go astray and Monk's decision to replace Antonsson with Souleymane Doukara in the 67th minute was roundly booed.

Alex Mowatt's swivel and shot following Doukara's cross was blocked by Town goalkeeper Danny Ward in the 69th minute, while Town pair Harry Bunn and Rajiv van La Parra were booked within the space of two minutes for ill-timed challenges on Charlie Taylor and Mowatt respectively.

Town substitute Kasey Palmer went close to doubling his side's lead with a curling effort from outside the box and Van La Parra's lob was well saved by Leeds goalkeeper Rob Green, while Wood went closest in the second half for Leeds with a downward header from Mowatt's cross, which barely troubled Ward.

The visitors were aggrieved not to be awarded a late penalty when van La Parra was bundled over by Bartley in the area and despite eight minutes of added time, Leeds failed to muster a clear-cut chance of an equaliser.
