Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to lead Manchester United to a ninth straight victory in all competitions when Burnley are the visitors to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Tuesday (kick-off 8pm).
The 45-year-old has made a record-breaking start in charge at Old Trafford, becoming the first boss to begin his United career with eight straight victories.
A ninth straight win could move United into the Champions League places for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, but Solskjaer expects a tough test from Burnley, who have steadied the ship somewhat after a dreadful run of form in the league at the start of the season.
"We know we are up against a team that is going to come here and fight for the three points," he said. "They will cause you problems [with their] physicality. The front two - we have got to be ready for them.
"But we have turned a corner ourselves. We looked really good against Arsenal defensively [in their 3-1 FA Cup victory].
"We defended the box really well. That is going to be important against Burnley as well."
Burnley manager Sean Dyche, who saw his side lose 5-0 at Manchester City in the FA Cup at the weekend, praised the positive impact Solskjaer's arrival at Old Trafford has had on Manchester United
"It seems from the outside looking in, it seems like he has just tried to loosen it a little bit and put more freedom on it," he said. "A bit more energy seems to have come back to the players.
"I think that's a skill. I think possibly that is what he has done, he has just given a different feel to the group in his own way. But I think they have responded, and they are delivering good performances. It seems a little bit more spark, not massive tactical changes, but just that spark within the group."
Team news
Chris Smalling could return after seven weeks on the sidelines when United host Burnley.
The defender has not featured since December 8 due to a foot issue, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering him after training over the past week.
Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini remain sidelined, while David De Gea will return in goal after being rested for the FA Cup win at Arsenal.
Robbie Brady is a major doubt for Burnley.
The Republic of Ireland international picked up a groin injury in the Clarets' FA Cup thumping at Manchester City and is unlikely to be passed fit.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson could return after three weeks out with a thigh injury, but doubts also remain over Phil Bardsley and Matt Lowton.
Opta stats
- Since losing their first ever Premier League meeting against them in August 2009, Man Utd are unbeaten in their last eight against Burnley (W5 D3), keeping six clean sheets in that time.
- Burnley are winless in their last 19 away games against United in all competitions (D7 L12), since winning 5-2 in a top-flight game in September 1962.
- United have a higher win rate in games played on Tuesdays (62.5%) than any other side in Premier League history, winning 30 of their 48 such matches.
- Tuesday is the only day of the week on which Burnley manager Sean Dyche has never lost a Premier League game, winning three and drawing two of his five games.
- Since beating Chelsea on the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season, Burnley are winless in their last eight away league games against 'big six' sides, losing the last four in a row by an aggregate score of 1-14.
- 45% of Burnley's 22 points won in the Premier League this season have come in their last four games (W3 D1 L0), while 41% of Man Utd's 44 points this season have come in their six games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
- Burnley have opened the scoring in just six different Premier League games this season (W4 D1 L1) - only Cardiff (3) have done so in fewer matches.
- Romelu Lukaku has had a hand in six goals in his six Premier League starts against Burnley, scoring four and assisting two.
- Marcus Rashford has scored in his last four Premier League appearances for Man Utd - should he score in this match, he would be the third youngest player to score in five in a row in the Premier League, behind Nicolas Anelka in 1998 and Jose Antonio Reyes in 2004.
Merson's prediction
The dream start continues for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer!
I still think United are not good enough defensively but they'll have too much going forward against a Burnley side who come into the game off the back of a 5-0 drubbing at Manchester City.
So it's a win for United and nine in a row for Solskjaer. Wow!
