Burnley boss Sean Dyche praised Scott Arfield mental strength after victory over Charlton

Burnley manager Sean Dyche hailed two-goal hero Scott Arfield and praised the midfielder's mental strength after seeing his side hammer lowly Charlton Athletic 4-0.

The Clarets went into the game having not scored in three, but took their frustration out on Charlton as they ran riot after the break.

Arfield's first-half strike gave the Clarets a lead at the break, before adding another after the interval and Andre Gray's 10th Burnley goal and Sam Vokes' late effort sealed victory.

"They've had their fair share of question marks, a few players here this season, but Scott has got toughness to his character, relentlessness to his character and it served him well," said Dyche.

"Yet again, it's the inner belief these lads should have from a season in the Premier League but it's not an easy season just because we have come down.

"You get more growth out of that than you do if it was all easy all the time. I reminded them of that at half-time to go and play with that freedom that I expect from them.

"It still takes time for teams to mould. We've had big players leave this football club and we've had to bring what we feel are very good players in.

"It's still moulding. It's still forming. Second half I think is as fluid as it has been.

"That could have been even more and some of the goals I thought were terrific."

Charlton manager Karel Fraeye was pleased with how his team started the game and the positive intent they showed but was far from happy with their efforts after the break.

"I think we came here not to park the bus," he said.

"I think we were the best team for 44 minutes and just showed the flow we are in to be 0-0, and even worse to go 1-0 down just before half-time at the worst possible moment.

"Then you come out and then the first ball they got goes in for 2-0 and then what happens to our team is what happens to every team in the bottom.

"It should not happen, and everybody knows it, but it happens and we don't look so consistent anymore.

"We were second best all second half, that's for me the summary of this game. The first goal is of course very important, we went for it, didn't get it.

"It's very concerning but this game we won't win any more so we just look to the next. We go to Bristol on Saturday and there are more points to win then."
