Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill has confirmed the club's efforts to sign striker Zach Clough from Bolton have failed despite a "good offer".
The Robins' had seen their £2million offer initially accepted, but on Thursday Cotterill was forced to admit defeat in his pursuit.
Clough has been at Bolton all of his professional career, and this season has turned out 14 times for the Trotters, though with just three goals to his name.
Speaking of the bid, Cotterill said: "The agent said it needed to be a head-turning offer...we offered a good deal but it clearly wasn't head-turning enough.
"We are constantly trying to strengthen the squad but we're not top of everyone's list at the moment."
