Neil Lennon is hopeful Bolton Wanderers will avoid going into administration on Monday despite Mark Davies' transfer to Sheffield Wednesday falling through.

The Sky Bet Championship's bottom club have been served with a winding-up petition by HMRC, which is due to be heard on January 18, and they need to raise funds before then if they are to avoid a 12-point penalty.

Davies was scheduled to have a medical with the Owls on Thursday but that did not take place and he remains a Bolton player.

Bolton's financial adviser Trevor Birch has other irons in the fire, though, and expects to be granted more time at Monday's hearing.

Manager Lennon said: "I think he feels that we will certainly avoid administration. He's got one or two other ideas that may prolong, or certainly delay, the tax case on Monday and give him more time to get investment in."

Davies will now be in the Bolton squad for Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest after missing the last two games and Lennon is puzzled and frustrated by the situation.

He said at his press conference on Friday morning: "As far as I know the deal is off. We are still looking for clarification as to why. I've not had chance to speak to Mark on it yet, but yesterday was the first time I had seen him in a week.

"We lost him for two games and then the deal doesn't go through, so it's very disappointing the way it's been handled.

"It's not our decision, it's come from Sheffield Wednesday. We need clarification from them on it."

Zach Clough also remains a Bolton player after Bristol City's bid to sign the forward failed this week, although he is injured and misses Saturday's game.

Lennon added: "In Zach's case it was that a deal couldn't be struck for personal terms. I can understand that."

Wanderers also rejected a bid for midfielder Josh Vela earlier this month, while midfielder Medo Kamara, who was one of the club's higher earners, departed the Macron Stadium on Thursday after his contract was mutually terminated.

Meanwhile, more than 3,500 fans have registered their interest in becoming members of Bolton's new Supporters' Trust.

A public meeting was held on January 6 with a view setting up a trust to help save the club.
