Wigan midfielder Chris McCann has announced he has left the club and signed for Major League Soccer side Atlanta United.

McCann, 28, was out of contract at the DW Stadium and failed to reach agreement over personal terms after being offered a fresh deal by the newly-promoted Sky Bet Championship club.

"Personally I would like to thank Wigan Athletic for an amazing three years at the club, there's been some ups and downs but I couldn't have finished on a more positive note," McCann said on his Twitter account.

"Unfortunately we couldn't come to agree new terms. I've had a great time and made friends for life there and also big thanks to all the fans for all their support.

"I would like to wish the club staff and all the players the very best for the upcoming season."

McCann added: "Absolutely thrilled to sign for Atlanta United! Cannot wait to get started very exciting times ahead for the club."

Atlanta, a new soccer franchise, will join Major League Soccer in 2017.
