Hamilton's Dougie Imrie says they're excited to face newly promoted Rangers in their opening game of the Scottish Premiership

Dougie Imrie believes Hamilton can cause a shock in the opening fixture of the Scottish Premiership season by beating Rangers on Saturday.

Accies visit Ibrox for the first match of the new campaign, which will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 from noon.

Rangers returned to Scotland's top flight after a four-year absence following demotion in 2012 when the club experienced financial difficulties.

Having worked their way back through the leagues, winning the Scottish Championship title at the second attempt, Rangers are now looking to end Celtic's stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title, but Imrie believes Hamilton can cause an upset on Saturday.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Imrie said: "It will be good. It's a good one to look forward to for the first game of the season.

"Everyone will be looking forward to it and it's a massive game with Rangers unfurling the flag as well.

"These are the games you want to play in so why not get it in the first game of the season. There's a great atmosphere and it's a great place to go and play as well.

"I'm sure all the boys will be looking forward to going there. I think they've got very good players but they're beatable.

"We'll give them the result they are due but if we go there and apply ourselves correctly we'll give them problems."

Hamilton are preparing for their third consecutive season in Scotland's top flight having spent five of the last eight campaigns playing among the country's elite clubs.

Nevertheless, they remain one of the favourites to be relegated and Imrie admits defying the doubters drives them on.

"For us, it's just to stay up," he added.

"That's the aim every year and we're always the favourites from everyone to go down. Every season, it's just for us to try to prove them wrong and stay in the league."

Hamilton's manager Martin Canning, meanwhile, has had surgery after he broke his cheekbone in a friendly with English non-league side Eastleigh last month.

His assistant Guillaume Beuzelin said: "Unfortunately the gaffer had a knock two weeks ago and he had an operation last night.

"He was on the phone to me this morning explaining exactly what he wanted me to do. Usually I take training anyway so things have not changed for me."
