Jota joined Birmingham for a club-record fee, but was getting calls from elsewhere throughout Deadline Day

Birmingham have signed Jota from Brentford on a four-year deal for a club-record fee of over £6m.

The 26-year-old was the subject of offers from Hull and Middlesbrough but the two Championship clubs failed to meet the Bees' asking price, which had previously been £8m.

The Blues confirmed: "Harry Redknapp fought off intense competition to land the talented playmaker and it is a new record eclipsing the £6m fee paid to Valencia for Nikola Zigic."

Jota is one of three Brentford players to move to St Andrews in the final days of the transfer window along with centre-back Harlee Dean and right-back Maxime Colin.

Spaniard Jota told Sky Sports News: "I am very happy to be here. I think I have come to a big club for the Championship and I think it can be a big year for us.

"Birmingham is a big club, has a big manager. The manager is one of the most important managers in England. I think we have a good team, good players, a good team to try and go up."

Jota, who joined Brentford in August 2014, made 78 appearances for the Bees, scoring 23 goals.

He had returned to his native Spain on an ill-fated 18-month loan deal in 2016 because of family reasons, but came back in January this year due to a lack of first-team games and bagged 12 goals in Brentford's season run-in last term.

And head coach Dean Smith said: "We are all sorry to see Jota leave. He had an extremely productive period for us last season when he returned from his loan spell with Eibar.

"I believe the speculation around his future has not helped him repeat those performances this season but he has never shied away from playing and training. He was a positive influence around the place and we all wish him well for his future career."
