Sunderland have made an approach to Leeds about signing goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, Sky sources understand.

The 34-year-old is the second choice stopper at Elland Road, though it is understood Leeds are reluctant to allow the player to leave.

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman is said to be unimpressed with the form of both Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele this season, and is looking at other options.

Lonergan is known to the Sunderland coaching staff as assistant manager Kit Symons brought him to Fulham, while first-team manager, in 2015.

A former England U21 international, Lonergan has made only nine appearances for Leeds this season and spent the majority of the campaign deputising for Felix Wiedwald.

Leeds would look to sell the player, only if they are able to bring in a replacement in the current window.
