Cardiff City are close to completing a deal for Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Alex Smithies, according to Sky Sports News.

We understand that the deal would see QPR receive £3m guaranteed, with £500,000 if Cardiff retain their Premier League status.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock is looking to sign a goalkeeper to compete with Neil Etheridge, who helped lead the club to promotion to the Premier League last season.

Smithies has impressed since arriving from Huddersfield in 2015, and has made 107 appearances for QPR.

The 28-year-old, a former England U19 international, signed a three-year contract at Loftus Road in February.

Sky sources understand Warnock also considered a move for Ipswich's Poland international Bartosz Bialkowski, who was called up for the World Cup in Russia.
