Ki Sung-Yueng is back at Newcastle after his time at the Asian Cup came to an abrupt end because of a hamstring injury.
The South Korea international was originally hurt during his country's first game at the tournament in Dubai on January 7, coming off injured during the second half of their 1-0 win over the Philippines.
Ki then aggravated the injury during a training session and was recalled by the Premier League club.
A club statement read: "He is now back on Tyneside, where his injury will be assessed by the club's medical staff."
The 29-year-old has played in 11 Premier League games this season and had started in a run of games from the end of November until his departure on international duty.
Newcastle already have significant injury concerns in midfield, where Jonjo Shelvey (thigh) and Mo Diame (hip) have been missing from recent games.
Neither player was involved in their 3-0 win over Cardiff City at the weekend, where Rafa Benitez opted to partner Isaac Hayden with youngster Sean Longstaff in midfield.
