Veteran defender announces international retirement
Veteran defender Thomas Helveg has called time on an international career which has spanned 14 years.
He made 108 appearances and scored two goals for his country after making his debut as a substitute in a 3-1 win against Hungary in April 1994.
The former Udinese, Milan, Internazionale, Norwich and Borussia Monchengladbach player is currently plying his trade with OB Odense, the club where his career began back in 1989.
He has featured at three European Championships and two World Cups and feels that the time is right at 36-years-old for him to walk away from the international arena.
Fantastic career
"I can say with a clear conscience that the time was right for me to stop making myself available for the squad," he said.
Current Denmark boss Morten Olsen has hailed him as an "incredibly important player for the national side", but fully understands his decision to retire.
"His decision is understandable," he said.
"He has plenty of reasons to look back on a fantastic career."
