Veteran shot-stopper steps into the breach
Colchester United have registered Ademola Bankole as a player due to a goalkeeping shortage at Layer Road.
The former Nigerian international recently arrived at the Championship club as a coach, deputising for player-coach Aidan Davison while he recovers from a shoulder operation.
However, with Mark Cousins, the regular back-up to first-choice shot-stopper Dean Gerken, going down with appendicitis on Wednesday boss Geraint Williams has been forced to take drastic action.
All attempts to draft in a short-term loanee proved to be fruitless, so Bankole is now likely to take a place on the bench for the clash with Wolves on Saturday.
He does have plenty of experience in English football and only announced his retirement from Conference North side Nuneaton Borough at the end of last season.
A 12-year career in the professional game also saw him represent Crewe, Brentford, QPR and the MK Dons at League level.
