Clearout begins after relegation is confirmed
Mark McGregor has been released by Port Vale following the club's relegation to League Two.
The Valiants' fate was sealed on Saturday after they could only muster a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield, and they have now begun preparations for the 2008/09 campaign.
McGregor is the first to fall foul of the summer clearout, ending a two-and-half year stay at Vale Park.
He admits that he is unsure as to what the future will now hold for him, but remains confident of finding a new club during the off-season.
Success
"It's sad, but football is a short career and sometimes you have to take a decision and that's what me and the club have come to," McGregor told Port Vale's
official website.
"I am not fixed up with another club yet, I just want to step back and see which is the best way forward.
"I'm looking to get a new club and get my name out there.
"Everybody here has helped me massively and all the players have been first draw.
"I'm no longer in the manager's plans, but that's the way football is. It's been like that since day one and will be never ending.
"You pick yourself up and get on with it and hopefully find something else and hopefully that will bring success."
Servant
McGregor has been a consummate professional throughout his career and Vale boss Lee Sinnott wishes the defender well wherever he ends up.
"He's been a good servant to Port Vale," he said.
"His attitude to training and games has always been first class.
"Times change and there will be a change in the personnel, as I told Mark in January to give him the possibility of fixing himself up before the mad rush in the summer.
"He has three weeks from now until the end of the season to seek another club. I think that is fair for what he has done for the club."
