John Thompson has ended speculation surrounding his future be signing a permanent deal at Notts County.
The Republic of Ireland international has spent the last three months at Meadow Lane on loan from League One outfit Oldham.
The tough-tackling defender did have opportunities to remain in the third tier, but has opted to remain with the Magpies.
The former Nottingham Forest man has penned a two-and-a-half year deal; much to the delight of County boss Ian McParland.
"I couldn't be more pleased," he told the club's
official website.
"John is exactly the type of player we need to bring into this football club if we are going to achieve our ambitions and his signing is a tremendous coup.
"He has been a revelation since he joined us and although that hasn't surprised me, there was always a fear that he might not want to join us on a permanent basis.
"Fortunately John has enjoyed his time here on loan and is now looking to playing a key role in helping us to keep Notts County moving forward."
Surgery
Versatile Thompson, who can operate anywhere across the back four and in midfield, had his contract at Oldham terminated by mutual consent this week.
Meanwhile, Latics keeper Mark Crossley is set to undergo surgery on his troublesome back injury.
The veteran shot-stopper has struggled with bulging disks is the past and was sidelined for almost a year with a similar problem in 1997.
However, the operation is expected to resolve the issue and the 39-year-old is hoping to be back in action within 8-10 weeks.
