Smith confirms defender talks, but Dailly and Hemdani let go

Rangers have offered veteran defender David Weir a new contract, but Christian Dailly and Brahim Hemdani have been released. Weir's current deal expires in the summer and the evergreen centre-half had been hoping to secure an extension. The Double winners' manager Walter Smith has now confirmed that Weir will be offered the chance to play on next season. "Davie's 39 and we have an agreement that we sit down and talk at the end of each season," said Smith. "I had a few words with him just before the cup final. He's keen to continue and there's a willingness on Rangers' part to have him for another season. "Both parties will sit down over the next few days and see what can happen."

Terrific professional

However, fellow defender Dailly and midfielder Hemdani have not been offered new contracts to stay with the Old Firm giants. Smith added on the club's official website: "Christian was brought in to do a specific job and he did it very well - never more so than in the March/April period of the season when were troubled by injuries. "He is a terrific professional and I'm sure he will be able to keep playing. "Although I didn't play Brahim this season, he was an important player for us last season and I have to praise his professionalism. We wish him well."
