Holland captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst hopes his experience can aid his chances of lifting the World Cup.

Veteran Dutch captain eyeing success in South Africa

Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst is dreaming of lifting the World Cup on Sunday and hopes his experience can aid his chances. The veteran midfielder is due to retire from the game after the final with Spain in Johannesburg and sees winning the tournament as a fitting way to end a glittering career. The former Barcelona, Arsenal and Rangers man insists he knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage and he believes the Dutch have a strong winning mentality ahead of the showdown. Holland have won each of their games so far in South Africa and also won all of their qualifying matches en-route to the tournament, a feat Van Bronckhorst hopes will work in their favour. "I played enough finals in my career to know what it is about," he said on Saturday. "But finals you don't play, you win them, and with that attitude we will get on the pitch tomorrow. We all believe we can do it. "If the relationship between players is good you all are willing to make that extra step for each other and that can make the difference," he added. "We all worked hard the last two years to create this and it would be great if we got rewarded for that tomorrow."

Dream

The 35-year-old, who spent four years in Spanish football, admits he has been dreaming of joining the elite list of captains to lift the trophy at the expense of his Spanish counterparts. "Tomorrow it will be special. It doesn't happen too often that you play a World Cup final, and even when it is then against friends, it will be us who will win the trophy," he added. "As a kid, you follow the World Cups and when the cup is lifted, it is a very special moment. "I have dreamed about lifting the trophy, as a kid I started watching all the World Cups and only a few have that moment of receiving and lifting it, like (Diego) Maradona, Dunga and Cafu. "Only a precious few players can do that, so it is a dream for me to lift that cup. It would be great for me but for sure for the whole team to clinch the cup."
