Left-back Paolo De Ceglie may require surgery after fracturing his kneecap in a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan on Saturday, with possible replacements Zdenek Grygera, Giorgio Chiellini and Armand Traore all on the sidelines.
2006 World Cup winner Grosso has been ousted from first-team duties after refusing a move away during the summer, something that has caused a dispute between the player's association union, with the 32-year-old now training with the youth team.
The union threatened to go on strike after the decision to omit a player who was a crucial part of the Azzurri's victory in Germany, scoring the winner in the semi-final against the hosts, and the decisive penalty in their shoot-out win over France in the final.
Union leader, AC Milan defender Massimo Oddo, felt that any decision to bring Grosso back into the team to face Salzburg in their Europa League clash on Thursday would strengthen their position.
"I think there are now all the conditions to reach a rapid collective agreement," Oddo told reporters.
