Winger will retire after the club's final game this weekend

Jesper Gronkjaer has announced FC Copenhagen's season finale against Aab this weekend will be his last game in professional football. The 33-year-old's retirement from playing comes after a successful five years with the Danish side, who he helped win four SAS Liga titles including this season's trophy. But the former Chelsea and Ajax player has admitted he wants to stop "at the peak" of his football career. Gronkjaer has proved a key player for Copenhagen, helping them reach the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time this year. And the former Denmark international - who played 80 times for his country before quitting international football in 2010 - has also had spells with Atletico Madrid, Stuttgart and Birmingham.

Career

Now, with Copenhagen having already wrapped up the league title, Gronkjaer will play his final game against ninth-placed Aalborg - where he started his career. Gronkjaer told the club's official website: "After careful consideration I've decided to end my football career at the highest level after Sunday's match against AaB. "My journey with FC Copenhagen has been amazing and I've had experiences which are etched in my memory."
