Transfer news: Siem de Jong says Newcastle have contacted agent

Ajax midfielder Siem de Jong claims Newcastle United have held informal talks with his agent regarding his availability.

The Dutchman has long been linked with a switch to St James' Park, and 2014 could be the year in which a move is made.

De Jong is, however, eager to point out that no official approach has been made and that he is yet to make a decision on his future.

He saw his brother Luuk spend the second half of the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Newcastle and is reluctant to rush into anything at this stage of the summer.

De Jong told Holland's Soccer News: "I really do not know what I'll do next season. I have spoken with the club but nothing is sorted.

"Also with Newcastle United, where my brother played last time, they have had a little contact with my agent.

"There was contact before, but it's nothing concrete.

"Newcastle is a great club."

Were De Jong to make a move to England, it appears unlikely that he will be joined by Luuk, with Newcastle having passed on the option of making his loan deal permanent after seeing him fail to find the target in 12 appearances.

Siem de Jong added: "I do not know if he'll be there. He is employed by (Borussia) Monchengladbach and has not received a contract offer from Newcastle.

"I'm going next week to talk to Ajax, then I'll see."
