Tottenham have confirmed that left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

The 32-year-old Cameroon international has not played for the club since May 2013, spending all of last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

He was made available on a free transfer last summer but there was no interest in the defender, and he has not been allowed to train with the first-team squad this season.

A statement released through his lawyer said: “Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have today agreed that Benoit should be released from his contract with the Club.

“Benoit would like to thank the club for the opportunity it has given him to play at the top level of English and European football.

“He would also like to thank the club's fans for all of their loyal support over the years.”
