Alex Rae has been appointed as new St Mirren manager on a deal running until the summer of 2017

Rae fills the void created by Ian Murray's decision to step down as St Mirren boss last weekend after just six months in charge of the Scottish Championship side.

The 46-year-old has worked in various coaching roles at MK Dons, Notts County and Blackpool under Paul Ince and was Alex McLeish's assistant at Belgian side KRC Genk last season.

The St Mirren job is Rae's first managerial role since his two-year stint as player-boss at Dundee, which ended in 2008.

He began playing at Falkirk but the former midfielder spent the majority of his career in England, plying his trade at Millwall for six years before a five-year spell with Sunderland.

Rae transferred to Wolves in 2001 but returned to his homeland three years later to join Rangers where he spent two seasons before moving to Dundee.

The Glaswegian's first game in charge is at bottom side Alloa on Saturday, who themselves have a new manager in Jack Ross. St Mirren are just four points clear of The Wasps and are currently eight in the Scottish Championship.
