Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri hoping to reach Champions League knockouts

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has targeted qualification from the Champions League group stage.

The Foxes have been drawn in Group G and will face Porto, Club Brugge and FC Copenhagen in their first-ever campaign among Europe's elite.

Leicester were one of the top seeds having won the league by 10 points in May and Ranieri, who spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon, is aiming to reach the knock-out stages.

He said: "It's good for our fans to come here and for you (the media) - a lot of you are in the Champions League for the first time. It's a very good experience and gift for everyone here. It's a good experience to go around Europe. I hope it's not just three away games - I hope for a little more.

"I don't know how many (Leicester need to qualify). Sometimes eight or 10 can be good, sometimes not. Slowly, slowly."

The Foxes will start their campaign next month and have not played in Europe since 2000, when they lost a UEFA Cup first-round tie to Red Star Belgrade.

Ranieri added: "I'm very proud and pleased a lot of fans will come with us around Europe."

Meanwhile, Nampalys Mendy is out of Saturday's game against Swansea at the King Power Stadium after suffering an ankle injury in last weekend's 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

Leicester are hunting their first win after picking up only one point from their opening two Premier League games and Ranieri remains focused on his survival target and on the visit of the Swans.

"I am very focused to achieve 40 points, this is our target. It's the same target of last season, we don't change our minds and it's important to be focused on our job," he added.

"It's not so stressful. It's good to get points - we're at home, we want to win. It will be a different game from last season."
