Jersey's bid to join UEFA has been rejected and the island will now appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Jersey, which has a population of around 100,000, submitted the application to leave the English FA last year, after Gibraltar and Kosovo were accepted.
At the moment, players from the Channel Islands can compete for England, as Graeme Le Saux and Matt Le Tissier have done in the past.
Jersey was told it does not comply with Article 5 in the UEFA statutes, which relates to 'independent states' under the United Nations.
UEFA says it will still visit Jersey in the coming weeks to discuss the status of football in the island.
CAS says the arbitration process is likely to take up to six months.
