Match Vault Everton v Southampton

Journey back to 1996's Southampton-Everton thriller ahead of Ronald Koeman's return to St Mary's with the Toffees on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

Southampton are keeping pace with Koeman's current outfit in the Premier League at present, just five points behind Everton in the table, but two decades ago the sides were experiencing very different fortunes.

A February clash in the 1995-96 season was vital to Southampton's chances of remaining in the top flight, while Everton were pushing for Europe.

After a goalless first-half, the home side went ahead through Mark Walters, who slipped between the Everton defence to put his team ahead just after the break.

The lead was quickly turned around though by a confident Everton side. Inside a disastrous four-minute spell for Southampton, Graham Stuart managed to put the away side level before Barry Horne sent the travelling support into raptures.

Although Everton looked to be heading to a win and closer to the European qualification places, there was time for Saints to come back with a late equaliser through Jim Magilton.

That goal delivered a vital point in a season that would finish with Saints safe from relegation on goal difference.
