Boro’s blatant offside goal

Middlesbrough's Marten de Roon scored despite being in an offside position in their 4-2 loss to relegation rivals Hull.

With Hull leading 3-1 against 19th-placed Middlesbrough entering first-half injury time, De Roon pulled a goal back to make the score 3-2.

A Boro corner was met by defender Ben Gibson, who directed his header towards goal. However, it was clearly lacking the power needed to get to goal. So, the Dutch midfielder De Roon stepped in and nodded the ball into the net.

There was initial confusion over whether the goal had been given as referee Michael Oliver went to consult with the linesman. But after the two had finished their discussion, the goal was officially awarded.

Replays showed De Roon was clearly standing in an offside position when he headed the ball past Eldin Jakupovic.

Fortunately for Hull, the goal did not have too great an effect on the match. Hull's Harry Maguire headed in from an Andrew Robertson set-piece in the 69th minute to kill the game off.
