Southampton were thrashed 4-0 by Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in Mauricio Pellegrino's first home match as manager.
The new Saints boss named new signing Jan Bednarek in the starting XI for Wednesday night's friendly match, alongside the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Fraser Forster, Nathan Redmond, Shane Long and Charlie Austin.
But the Premier League side trailed 2-0 at half-time through a Michael Gregoritsch brace (35,39) before Ja-Cheol Koo's header extended their advantage in the 67th minute.
Raphael Framberger added a fourth eight minutes from time as Southampton struggled in their preparations for their Premier League opener against Swansea on August 12.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth beat Sky Bet League Two side Yeovil Town 3-1 at Huish Park.
Summer signing Keston Davies opened the scoring against Adam Federici in the 15th minute, but Lys Mousset's clever dinked finish levelled the scores 14 minutes later.
Benik Afobe pounced to make it 2-1 in the 35th minute after Nathan Ake's header from a corner had been fumbled - and the striker scored Bournemouth's third nine minutes after the break after good work from Marc Pugh and Ryan Fraser.
Defender Ake started the game, following his £20m move from Chelsea, but Asmir Begovic and Jermain Defoe were not involved ahead of the opening Premier League fixture at West Brom.
Earlier in the day, Newcastle prepared for life back in the Premier League with 3-1 victory away at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring in the 37th minute when he forced summer signing Christian Atsu's cut-back over the line - and Matt Ritchie doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a fine free-kick.
Paul Dummett conceded a penalty for a foul on Yunus Mali shortly after the break - and the Wolfsburg man sent Rob Elliot the wrong way from the penalty spot.
But Atsu bagged Newcastle's third (69) with a tap-in following good work from Jonjo Shelvey and fellow new signing Javier Manquillo.
