Steve McClaren has accepted a coaching consultancy job at Maccabi Tel Aviv, ending speculation that he could take over as Hearts boss.

The former England head coach will join the Israeli club on a rolling contract assisting manager Jordi Cruyff, who he worked with at Manchester United at the turn of the century.

McClaren was pictured at the Netanya Stadium for Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Beitar Jerusalem.

The 56-year-old had applied for the vacant job at Tynecastle following Ian Cathro's dismissal earlier this summer, but he is not on the club's five-man shortlist.

The Scottish Premiership side are considering either interim boss Jon Daly, Paul Hartley, Steven Pressley, Dougie Freedman or Billy Davies.

McClaren's most recent job was his second ill-fated stint as manager of Derby County, from which he was sacked in March after a poor run and replaced by Gary Rowett.

McClaren has coached at 13 clubs including spells as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Sven-Goran Eriksson with England, before taking that job full-time during the 2006-07 season.
