England player ratings: Peter Taylor's verdict on World Cup Qualifier with Slovakia

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 04: Gareth Southgate manager of England and Gary Cahill of England shake hands after the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier between

England beat Slovakia 2-1 in Monday night's World Cup Qualifier to move five points clear at the top of Group F with only two games to of the campaign remaining.

However, it wasn't straightforward for Gareth Southgate's side, who went behind to Stanislav Lobotka's goal after just two-and-a-half minutes.

England responded with Eric Dier turning in a corner on 38 minutes to settle the nerves, before Marcus Rashford struck the winner 14 minutes after half-time to put England five points clear of Slovakia and on the brink of World Cup qualification.

Former England manager Peter Taylor watched the match for Sky Sports News - and he gave each of England's players a rating out of 10...

Joe Hart - 7

It was generally a quiet night for Hart. He did nothing wrong and made a good save late on. To be fair though, that's a save he should be making.

Kyle Walker - 6

It's a bit of a harsh mark but the Man City defender could have done better for Slovakia's goal. He made a forward run when Rashford didn't have good possession. It's a dangerous run and one shouldn't have made. He should have waited to see what Rashford was going to do. Rashford was obviously wrong but Walker should have held his run for me.

Gary Cahill - 7

A solid performance from the Chelsea defender alongside Phil Jones. The pair are showing signs of developing a good understanding which is good news for England going forward.

Phil Jones - 8

Jones gets the highest rating of the night from me. It was a very solid performance and he was certainly the pick of the bunch in the back four. He's forming an excellent partnership with Gary Cahill and becoming a fixture in the side which is really handy for Gareth Southgate.

Ryan Bertrand - 7

Bertrand gave us excellent balance and put in a good shift on the left flank. He provided an excellent option going forward and got ahead of Rashford and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on numerous occasions.

Jordan Henderson - 7

Henderson has done absolutely nothing wrong as captain in the past couple of games. He's certainly enhanced his chances of getting the armband on a permanent basis. Against Slovakia he was instrumental in controlling the game in the latter stages as Southgate's men looked to protect their lead. He was always available, playing a crucial role in keeping possession for his side.

Eric Dier - 6

The Tottenham midfielder had a difficult start against Slovakia following his return to the side from suspension. He kept losing the ball and against better opposition, he could be punished.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 7

The Liverpool forward deserves a seven. He was always positive in possession and kept going right until he was substituted. His final ball could have been better but he worked hard for the team.

Dele Alli - 7

Judging him on his football alone, it was another solid performance from the Tottenham man. He kept finding pockets of space in the final third and was a constant threat to the Slovakia defence. His combination play with Spurs team-mate Harry Kane is world class and a huge bonus for England.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Rashford showed a lot of character to bounce back from his early error. He showed everybody that he's got an end product, scoring a superb match-winning goal for his side.

Harry Kane - 7

England's striker Harry Kane shoots against Slovakia

it wasn't Kane's night but he still led the line superbly. He's a bit different now to when he first came on the scene because he doesn't generally play the simple ball. When he first came into the side he was very respectful, laying balls off but now he's a bit greedy. He wants to score at every opportunity but I don't mind that because he gets the goals.

Subs - Raheem Sterling, Danny Welbeck and Jake Livermore

It's unfair to mark their performances as they came on so late in the game. The timings of the substitutions was excellent with Sterling and Welbeck in particular showing excellent pace. They are very good options for England off the bench late in a game.
