Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says winning the Champions League is the club's 'final step' with the trophy having evaded them to date

Vincent Kompany says a Champions League win is all Manchester City have left to achieve.

But Kompany says City need to worry about Tuesday's opponents Hoffenheim before they can even consider the bigger picture.

Winning the Champions League is a long-term ambition of the club but they fell to Liverpool at the quarter-final stage back in the spring and suffered a shock defeat to Lyon in their opening Group F game this season.

Kompany said: "I'd love to win a European trophy with City - but it's such a tough competition to win.

"Across Europe, there are about eight teams with just as much of a claim.

"We've got to deal with the fact we lost to Lyon.

"We'll worry about Hoffenheim first and, if we get momentum, anything is possible.

There was some good news for City on Monday as Kevin De Bruyne returned to training - having been out since suffering a knee ligament injury in August.

Kompany said: "It is difficult to quantify how much of a loss he has been.

"Kevin is one of the best midfielders in the world and, whenever he is on the pitch, you get more goals and assists. That is what you lose.

"Luckily, we have a huge squad and many players who were able to fill in the gap while he was gone, but Kevin is always a big presence on the pitch."
