Manchester City are optimistic of reaching an agreement with Phil Foden on a new long-term contract, Sky Sports News understands.

The 18-year-old, who has been linked with a move abroad in recent weeks, has just over 18 months remaining on his current contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Sky Sports News understands talks between City and Foden have been ongoing for some time, but the Premier League champions remain confident of a positive resolution.

Foden made his City debut in last season's Champions League victory over Feyenoord and has since featured a further 19 times in all competitions, scoring his first goal for the club in the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Oxford in September.

City boss Pep Guardiola said earlier this year he was keen for Foden to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

"My dream is for him to stay 10 years and if Phil stays for 10 years, he can - in the next decade - play regularly and after [that] I don't know what is going to happen with him," he said.

Foden played a major role in England U17s' World Cup victory last year, scoring twice in the 5-2 final win over Spain and earning the player of the tournament award.
