Paul Scholes may find out if he can take over as Oldham manager later this week, Sky Sports News understands.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder wants to take over at the club he supported as a boy, but the EFL and FA are still to decide whether he can do so while retaining part-ownership of National League side Salford City.

Scholes owns a stake in the club along with his former Manchester United team-mates Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham

EFL rules state that a person cannot have an interest in two clubs at the same time, rule 104 states that: "Except with the prior written consent of the Board a person, or any associate of that person, who is interested in a club cannot at the same time be interested in any other football club".

It's understood Scholes does not want to relinquish his involvement in Salford City, however the matter would not be an issue unless the National League side were promoted to the Football League in May, and with both sides already out of this season's FA Cup it would only become an issue in next season's competition.

Football's authorities are understood to be looking at the issue before this weekend, but it is not known if a decision will be made at that time.
