Rangers have paid tribute to former captain Eric Caldow, who has died at the age of 84.

Caldow, who played predominantly as a full-back, made 407 appearances for the Ibrox club and was capped 40 times by Scotland, captaining his country on 14 occasions.

He began his Rangers career as a teenager, playing alongside fellow greats Willie Woodburn, Sammy Cox and Willie Waddell, and left in 1966.

Caldow won five Scottish titles with Rangers, along with two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.

He went on to play for Stirling Albion before moving to England with non-League side Corby Town, who he would also manage along with Stranraer.

Rangers chairman Dave King said: "I was profoundly saddened to hear of Eric's passing and I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to his family. Every one of us at the club share their sense of loss.

"Eric truly was a player who could easily be described as heroic and came to epitomise the standards, characteristics and values associated with this club.

"He was, of course, also a player of international renown with Scotland and this is a sad day for the club and the country."
