Robbie Fowler appointed Brisbane Roar head coach

Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler has been appointed head coach of Australian side Brisbane Roar.

The 44-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the A-League side, and will take charge once the current season ends next month.

Fowler said: "I'm really looking forward to the challenge and am determined to bring success to a club that has such a proud history in the Hyundai A-League.

"I'm really keen to get started and make a difference. My family and I have already experienced living in Queensland, so I'm really happy to be returning and being part of the Brisbane Roar family."

Brisbane chief executive David Pourre added: "I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome Robbie to our proud and successful football club.

"BRFC is confident that we have appointed an outstanding person and someone who is hungry to succeed. I know our members, supporters, sponsors and fans will be excited for season 2019/20."

Fowler has coached with Liverpool's academy since retiring in 2012, and also had a brief spell as player/manager of Thai club Muangthong United.

Fowler, who scored 163 goals in 344 games for Liverpool, played in the A-League for Perth Glory and Northern Fury.

Brisbane are currently second-bottom of the A-League, having won just four of their 26 matches this season.
