Sol Campbell discusses Macclesfield's financial issues and says the players must focus heading into their final game

Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell says his team must be ruthless if they are to retain their EFL status heading into the final game of the season.

The Silkmen, 22nd in Sky Bet League Two, sit two points above the relegation zone heading into their final fixture against 21st-placed Cambridge on Saturday, meaning their battle to stay in the division is in their own hands.

Despite Macclesfiel enduring financial difficulty, Campbell has called on his players to remain focused and deliver a positive result in their final game of the season.

"It's incredibly important [to stay up]," he told Sky Sports. "In these moments, you've got to be ruthless as a manager and a player.

"Let's get over the line and then worry about what's happening next year.

"That's what it's all about, getting over the line, work and work and work, put in 100 per cent and get over the line, however we do it. Stay professional until the end then we'll see what happens next year."

Campbell took over the Macclesfield job in November and has won seven of his 26 games in charge. The former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth defender says he has developed as a manager in his debut campaign.

"I've learnt that I'm a good negotiator, which you have to be in this scenario, and you've got to manage people" he added.

"If you can't manage people or players, then you'll struggle, it's as simple as that. You're not going to manage everybody but if you can show the lads 'this is me, I am human and I want to be in the mix' then that's what it's all about.

"Yes, I am the boss but there is also flexibility in the players' attitude and how they approach things but all I want is 100 per cent work rate. I think that's the best way to respect both sides."

Gillette Soccer Saturday is live on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event from 2.45pm.
