Wanderers boss dismisses Hunt bid claims
Mick McCarthy has hailed the impact of Wolves' record signing Kevin Doyle ahead of the vital Premier League relegation clash at Hull City.
The Wanderers chief believes the Republic of Ireland international produced one of the best displays ever seen by a Wolves forward at Molineux during their goalless draw with Liverpool.
Doyle was the lone-man upfront in McCarthy's 4-5-1 formation which frustrated the Reds to claim a vital point and the £6.5million capture from Reading is proving his worth in the eyes of his club boss.
"If anyone has seen a better centre-forward display at Molineux than against Liverpool, then I would like to see it," he said.
"That was a classic performance from Kevin Doyle. He was outstanding. If he had scored to top it off, it would have been a ten plus rating out of ten performance.
"I thought we were getting a really good player when we signed him because I knew him from the Irish squads and playing against Wolves with Reading for a couple of seasons.
"I've not been surprised with how well he has done and have been absolutely thrilled with him overall with his personality around the place, his contribution to the club.
"He is a terrific player and, whatever we paid for him, he is worth every penny."
Disciplined performances
Doyle has been on hand to bag five out of the 17 goals Wolves have scored this season.
McCarthy will be looking for the former Royals striker to carry on his highly disciplined performances and defend from the front if they are to claim the three points against the Tigers, who have conceded 46 goals - the highest amount in the Premier League this season.
"We want to stay in the games and it is not going to be an easy game. They have been playing 4-3-3, 4-5-1, with an extra man in midfield," said McCarthy.
"The reality is we want to stay in the game, we don't want to go to Hull and be chasing the game and get done.
"It is alright saying we want to win. We don't want to lose, that's for sure. We won't be going to Hull and being gung-ho."
The Wolves boss also dismissed claims they had made a bid for Hull midfield engine Stephen Hunt, who has been in inspired form for his new side since signing from Reading in August.
