Azzurri legend eyes return to football with national role

Roberto Baggio is in line for a return to the game as part of Italy's national team set-up. The Azzurri legend has distanced himself from football since his retirement in 2004, but has now made himself available for employment after Italy's dismal World Cup campaign. Marcelo Lippi's men failed to progress from the group stages in South Africa, with the former Juventus coach stepping down from his role as a result. Lippi has since been replaced by Cesare Prandelli but Vittorio Petrone, Baggio's agent, has declared his client available to help turn their fortunes around. "Roberto has decided to make himself available, it represents a great step forward towards his return to the world of football," Petrone told Sky Italia. The manner of the Azzurri's early exit sparked panic within the Italian Football Federation, and they are likely to turn to Baggio to help steer them back on track. Baggio, who scored 27 goals in 56 appearances for his country, is set to meet with president Giancarlo Abete in the near future to discuss a possible role.
